Contributions from Smriti Mandhana, Harmanpreet Kaur and Deepti Sharma helped India overhaul a 121-run target set by the Governor-General XI at the North Sydney Oval on Friday.

After being asked to field first, India’s pace battery and off-spinner Shreyanka Patil did well to keep the home side quiet. Sianna Ginger, slotted at number eight, chipped in with a crucial unbeaten 40 off 31 balls to help the side to a respectable score in a batting effort where no other batter scored more than 17 runs.

Kranti Gaud removed Georgia Voll with a peach of a delivery that angled into her middle and leg stump. That set the tone for a controlled bowling effort from the visitor. The GG XI had lost half its side by the halfway mark with just 48 runs on the board.

The air in Australia suits Arundhati Reddy quite well. She followed up her heroics at Perth last summer with this performance where she bowled four overs for just 15 runs, taking two wickets at an impressive economy rate of 3.75. Shreyanka Patil also got a full spell, taking two wickets and effecting a run out. Deepti Sharma, Harmanpreet Kaur’s strike bowler of choice, was given just an over, where she was smashed for 15 runs.

India’s response began with Smriti taking control of the chase after losing Shafali Verma in the third over. GG XI’s keeper Nicole Fultum had a busy day behind the stumps, involved in three of the five Indian wickets to fall, but 121 was too small a target for an Indian batting lineup with depth, getting the win with 2.3 overs to spare.

India’s multi-format tour of Australia gets underway with a three-match T20I leg that starts on February 15.
