South Africa secured a win over Afghanistan after a double super over encounter during the Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 clash played on February 11 at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.
Aiden Markram’s side secured their second straight win and retained their second spot in Group D in the Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 points table.
After being invited to bat first, South Africa openers Aiden Markram and Quinton de Kock opened the innings while Fazalhaq Farooqi opened the bowling attack.
Despite Markram’s cheap dismissal, Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickelton made a solid partnership of 115 runs where de Kock scored 59 runs before being dismissed by Rashid Khan.
Rashid Khan went to dismiss Ryan Rickelton for 61 runs while Azmatullah dismissed Dewald Brevis for 23 runs.
With a contributions from David Miller and Marco Jansen, South Africa scored 187 runs in their 20 over innings.
Azmatullah Omarzai picked three wickets while Rashid Khan completed his spell with 2 wickets. Farooqi complete his tally with 1 wicket.
In the pursuit of chasing 187 run target, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran opened the innings while Lungi Ngidi opened the attack.
Despite a solid start, Afghanistan lost three wickets of Ibrahim Zadran, Gulbadin Naib and Sediqullah in the powerplay.
After Afghanistan lost the wicket of Darwish Rasooli on a run out, Azmatullah Omarzai a and Rashid Khan added 22 and 20 runs respectively keeping Afghanistan alive in the clash.
Noor Ahmad made a cameo scoring 15 runs off 9 deliveries helping the side to score 187 runs before losing all 10 wickets.
In the super over, Afghanistan scored 17 runs while South Africa also scored 17 runs to play another super over. Lungi Ngidi picked three wickets while
In the second super over, South Africa batted first where Dewald Brevis lost his wicket for 6 runs. However David Miller added 16 runs as South Africa scored 23 runs.
Despite losing the wicket of Nabi, Gurbaz fight till the last smashing three sixes in a row. By the end of over, Afghanistan scored 19 runs and lost the game.
Lungi Ngidi was named as the Player of the match. Speaking on the post match presentation, Ngidi said, “I’ve lost so much weight today. I’ve never been that stressed in my life in a cricket game. But I’m happy to come out on the winning side. I actually knew that I was probably going to be the option (for the Super Over). And the captain said to keep doing the same.”
South Africa will play their next game against New Zealand on February 14 at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.
