Australia defeated Ireland by 67 runs at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo after a great bowling performance by the Aussie bowlers.
Winning the toss, Australia decided to bat first in their first ICC T20 Men’s World Cup 2026 campaign without their first-choice captain, Mitchell Marsh, who was ruled out of the first game after suffering a groin injury in training. Travis Head took the captain’s responsibility against Ireland.
Travis Head did not have a great day as captain, as he was run out for 6 runs off 7 balls on the first ball of the second over after a mix-up with Josh Inglis. However, after that, Cameron Green and Inglis carried the innings forward before Mark Adair took the wicket of Green, who got out on 21 off 11 balls. Soon after that, Inglis ‘ quick-fire innings of 37 runs off 17 balls ended, and Australia were down to three wickets on 69 runs.
Australia struggled to hit boundaries in the middle phase, in which Matt Renshaw played a very sensible innings of 37 runs off 33 balls. But in the end phase, from 16-20 overs, Australian batters scored at a 10.6 run rate to reach 182 for 6 on a gripping pitch. Marcus Stoinis scored 45 runs off 29 balls, which helped them reach that total.
Ireland’s spinners Matthew Humphreys, George Dockrell, Harry Tector, and Gareth Delany had an economical spell, conceding 100 runs for 3 wickets in 13 overs at an economic rate of 7.69. Mark Adair, with two wickets, was the top wicket-taker of Ireland.
Ireland, while chasing the target of 183, Paul Stirling pulled a hamstring on the 1st ball and retired hurt. However, Ross Adair scored 11 runs in the 1st over of Xavier Bartlett, but after that, they never looked in control of the game as Nathan Ellis and Adam Zampa took four wickets each to bowl them out on just 115 runs to help Australia register their first T20 World Cup 2026 win by 67 runs.
George Dockrell’s (41 off 29) and Locran Tucker’s (24 off 27) innings were impressive for Ireland while chasing the target of 183
Australia 182 for 6 (Stoinis 45, Inglis 37, Renshaw 37) beat Ireland 115 (Dockrell 41, Ellis 4-12, Zampa 4-23) by 67 runs.
Travis Head’s run-out was an unfortunate event for Australia after his simple catch was dropped by Benjamin Calitz on 6 runs. Contributions by Renshaw, Stoinis, and Inglis were good for Australia.
Ireland were in a great situation after taking the third wicket on 69, but once again failed to capitalize on it and gave away too many runs at the end of the innings. Ellis’s slower deliveries and Zampa’s attacking line destroyed the Irish batting lineup.
Nathan Ellis was named the Player of the Match for his amazing spell of 4/12 in four overs.
For Australia, this win means a lot because they were without their key players, and many players are new in the group, which will give them confidence for the upcoming matches.
After losing both matches, Ireland would like to finish the tournament on a high note and secure some positive results.
