Dilon Heyliger produced a moment of pure brilliance in the field with a stunning boundary-line catch to dismiss South Africa captain Aiden Markram during Match No. 9 of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 on February 9 at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. The spectacular effort briefly lifted Canadian spirits in an otherwise dominant outing for the Proteas.
The dismissal came in the 12th over of South Africa’s innings, bowled by Ansh Patel. On the third delivery of the over, Patel bowled a straight ball that Markram lofted powerfully towards long-on. The shot looked destined to clear the boundary, but Heyliger, sprinting to his left, timed his jump perfectly and plucked the ball inches inside the ropes.
Heyliger showed excellent awareness, balance and managed to stay clear of the boundary cushions despite his forward momentum, completing one of the finest catches of the tournament. The catch brought an end to Markram’s superb knock of 59 off 32 balls, an innings that included 10 fours and one six.
Despite that moment of fielding excellence, South Africa dominated the match. Batting first, the Proteas posted a commanding 213/4 in their 20 overs. Markram led from the front and received solid support from the rest of the batting lineup as South Africa registered their sixth 200-plus total in Men’s T20 World Cup history, the most by any team. For Canada, Ansh Patel was the standout bowler, returning impressive figures of 3/31 from his four overs.
In reply, Canada fought hard but fell short, managing 156/8 in their allotted 20 overs. Opener Navneet Dhaliwal top-scored with a well-made 64, showing composure against a disciplined South African attack. However, the Proteas bowlers kept tightening the screws throughout the chase. Right-arm pacer Lungi Ngidi delivered a match-winning performance, finishing with figures of 4/31 and dismantling Canada’s middle order.
Ngidi’s impactful spell earned him the Player of the Match award as South Africa cruised to a comprehensive 57-run victory. The Proteas will next face Afghanistan on February 11 in Ahmedabad, while Canada will look to regroup ahead of their clash against the United Arab Emirates on February 13 in Delhi.
