The fifth T20I between India and New Zealand in Thiruvananthapuram garnered headlines due to multiple complaints emerging regarding the alleged overpricing of drinking water inside the Greenfield International Stadium.

The incident occurred during the India-New Zealand fifth T20I on January 31, the final match of the series and the first men’s international fixture at the venue in over two years. As fans flocked to the stadium in large numbers, several videos and social media posts surfaced showing spectators being charged prices well above the rates approved by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

The issue quickly gained traction online, prompting the Kerala Cricket Association to initiate an official investigation.

In a press release, the Kerala Cricket Association confirmed that it had received multiple complaints regarding inflated water prices at certain stalls inside the stadium. According to BCCI guidelines and agreements with the official beverage sponsor, the price of 200 ml packaged drinking water is fixed at INR 10, while 250 ml energy drinks or juices are capped at INR 50.

KCA assures that appropriate action will be taken

KCA stated that vendors were clearly instructed to display the approved rates at all kiosks, maintain sufficient stock based on expected crowd size, and strictly follow the eco-friendly ‘Green Protocol’ mandated for international fixtures.

However, reports suggested that these guidelines were violated at select locations, with spectators being charged significantly higher amounts.

Taking the matter seriously, the KCA formally notified the BCCI about the alleged lapses. The board has since assured that appropriate action will be taken after reviewing the complaints. The association also expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to fans and assured that a thorough examination of the contracted agency’s role would be carried out.

KCA stated that any difference from approved protocols is unacceptable and undermines the spectator experience.

The association confirmed that stricter preventive measures would be enforced during future matches at the venue to ensure compliance with pricing norms. Notably, there have been similar complaints previously at other Indian venues, including the MCA Stadium in Pune.
