Delhi: South Africa’s Test and ODI captain Temba Bavuma has completely rejected the suggestion of having separate coaches for different formats in Indian cricket. He believes that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed Gautam Gambhir not as part of any immediate plan, but with long-term thinking.

According to Bavuma, the Indian board wants the coach to get at least two to four years of time, so that he can prepare the team as per his thinking. It is not necessary that everything be perfect during this period. Team building is a process that has its ups and downs.

He also recalled that Shubman Gill’s injury during the Test series had increased India’s problems. Gill was ruled out of the second Test after suffering a neck injury in the Eden Gardens Test, forcing India to field a temporary captain and a new number four batsman. South Africa took full advantage of this.

However, Bavuma believes that after Gill’s return, the picture of the Indian Test team will not be completely disappointing. Domestic cricket will provide opportunities to new players and there will be competition for many places in the Test team.

According to him, it will take time for India to regain strength in red-ball cricket, but with the right direction and patience the team can make a comeback.

Overall, this statement by Temba Bavuma presents a balanced picture for Indian cricket. His clear message is that lasting success is achieved not by haste in coaching or team selection, but by patience and consistency. The responsibility given to Gambhir is also a part of this long-term thinking, where the emphasis is on creating a strong foundation rather than immediate results. Remember, a house can be erected in a short time, but building a palace requires patience, hard work and time.
