The Board of Control for Cricket in India's secretary Devajit Saikia has opened up on the speculation regarding head coach Gautam Gambhir's potential sacking. There have been reports floating around that Gambhir would get removed from his position midway through his contract due to Team India's underwhelming recent results.

Saikia pointed out that nothing much can be done about people in a democratic country like India where everyone, ranging from the media to ex-cricketers, has an opinion.

“India is a country of 140 crore people and everybody is a cricket expert. Everybody will have an opinion. It is a democratic country, and we cannot gag anybody. All the opinion-makers are free to give their opinions, including the media. There is a lot of speculated news in the domain, and also various ex-cricketers, cricketers, or other people are also giving opinions. In social media, it is full of them," stated Saikia, as quoted by Sportstar.

However, he underscored that the BCCI has capable former cricketers sitting at positions of responsibility. Saikia noted that each decision goes through several rounds of scrutiny before getting approved.

“But the thing is that we have a cricket committee in the BCCI, who are ex-cricketers. They are dedicated and make all the decisions. On the other hand, for team selection, we have five selectors. They also have to qualify to get into that position. They are the people who take that also. For every decision, there can be a counter-opinion. So, those opinions we have to address, and we have to consider. But the final decision is always taken by the cricket committee as well as the selectors," he added.

The past few months have been turbulent for Gambhir, as India lost an ODI series in Australia and were clean swept by South Africa in a home Test series. Recently, New Zealand came from behind to win the ODI series by a 1-2 margin.

Many people have called for the Men in Blue to move on from Gambhir. His next big assignment will be the T20 World Cup. The mega event is scheduled to be played across February and March.
