Amelia Kerr and Amanjot Kaur’s 83-run partnership for the sixth wicket proved futile as Mumbai Indians succumbed to a 22-run loss against UP Warriorz by 22 runs in the Women’s Premier League, with the defending champion losing to the Warriorz for the second time in three days.

After Meg Lanning led from the front with a 45-ball-70 to guide UPW to 187 for eight on a batting-friendly surface at the D.Y. Patil Stadium on Saturday, MI was on the back foot for most of the chase, as it lost five wickets for just 69 runs.

The host was staring at a heavy defeat as none of its top-order batters could rise to the occasion. But Kerr (49 n.o., 28b, 6×4, 1×6) and Amanjot (41, 24b, 4×4, 3×6) brought the game to life, making most of the reprieves.

However, with Shikha Pandey bowling some tight spells at the death, and eventually breaking the partnership with a sharp return catch of Kerr, Mumbai eventually fell short of the target. But it didn’t go down without a fight.

MI changed its opening pair once again and went ahead with Hayley Matthews and Sajeevan Sajana. However, the partnership did not last beyond a couple of overs. On a day when neither Harmanpreet Kaur nor Nicola Carey could step up, MI struggled in the Powerplay.

But the Warriorz dominated in every department.

Despite losing opener Kiran Navgire early on, the Warriorz rode on captain Lanning and Phoebe Litchfield’s 119-run partnership off just 74 balls to turn things around. As the Mumbai outfit dropped quite a few catches, Lanning and Litchfield seized control of the innings and went on to score gritty fifties, before Amanjot broke the partnership, removing the latter.

Matthews struck in the next over to dismiss Lanning and put brakes on the Warriorz’s innings. But quickfire cameos from Chloe Tyron and Harleen Deol guided the Warriorz to a competitive total, which it managed to defend.
