New Zealand defeated India by 50 runs in the fourth T20I at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium, Visakhapatnam. Chasing 216, the Men in Blue were dismissed for 165 in 18.4 overs. Shivam Dube scored a fifty for India, but it was not enough as other batters failed to get going. Mitchell Santner took three wickets for the Kiwis.
New Zealand reached 215/7 after Tim Seifert, Devon Conway, Glenn Phillips and Daryl Mitchell made their performances count with the bat. Arshdeep Singh and Kuldeep Yadav took wickets for India.
India were outplayed by the Kiwis in the fourth contest in the five-match series. Dube posted 65 off 23, packed with 7 sixes and 3 sixes. Sanju Samson (24 off 15) and Rinku Singh (39 off 30) hit some big shots, but their efforts were not enough.
New Zealand finally managed to put the Indian bowlers under pressure, scoring 215/7 in the fourth T20I. Seifert and Conway started brilliantly adding 100 runs for the first wicket in 8.2 overs. Seifert amassed 62 runs off just 36 balls, laced with 7 fours and 3 sixes. His opening partner Devon Conway took 23 deliveries to post 44 runs, including 4 boundaries and 3 maximums.
Phillips, the all-rounder, managed 24 runs off 16 deliveries, packed 3 fours and 1 six but his departure led to a batting collapse before Mitchell rescued the innings. His 18-ball 39 took the total to over the 200-run mark. Mitchell smashed 3 maximums and 2 fours. Mitchell Santner (11 off 6), Zak Foulkes (13 off 6) and Matt Henry (6 off 3) added much needed runs.
Kuldeep Yadav and and Arshdeep Singh took two wickets each.
Tim Seifert was named the Player of the Match for accumulating 62 runs.
India lost five wickets for 82 runs, which played a big role in New Zealand’s win. Kiwis bowlers kept things tight from the start, with Ish Sodhi and Jacob Duffy picking up two wickets each. Matt Henry and Zak Foulkes added one scalp each to their bowling figures.
India captain Suryakumar Yadav opened up on his team’s defeat.
“We purposely played six batters as we wanted to go in with five proper bowlers and test ourselves. We have batted well while batting first, but wanted to check how we bat when we lose two or three wickets while chasing 180-200. Two more partnerships could have made the difference,” he said.
New Zealand skipper Mitchell Santner lauded his players. “We batted like India in the powerplay overs. Daryl finished well for us. We will welcome back a couple of guys for the last match,” he said.
Tim Seifert, who was declared the Player of the Match, called himself lucky. “You get a bit lucky early on. We wanted to put the Indian bowlers under pressure. The World Cup will be high scoring if the pitches remain like this,” he said.
India still leads the series 3-1, with the last match scheduled at the Greenfield International Stadium, Thiruvananthapuram on January 31.
A1: Tim Seifert was awarded Player of the Match for his brilliant batting performance.
A2: He scored 62 runs in 36 balls, with the help of 7 boundaries and 3 sixes.
A3: New Zealand won by 50 runs.
