Delhi: Afghanistan-born fast bowler Zainullah Ihsan has been included in the Scotland national team for the first time. He has got a place in the 15-member squad announced for the upcoming T20 World Cup to be held in India and Sri Lanka. Ihsaan, who recently got the eligibility to play for Scotland, is the only uncapped player of this team.
This squad is the first team selected under the supervision of Scotland’s new men’s head coach Owen Dawkins, who was appointed to the post only last month. After the selection, Cricket Scotland’s Head of Performance Steve Snell said that Ihsan has consistently impressed in under-age cricket and playing for the ‘A’ team. According to him, Ihsaan has both speed and versatility, which can prove important at this level.
The command of the team has once again been handed over to experienced all-rounder Richie Berrington. In this squad, 11 players who played in the 2024 T20 World Cup (West Indies and America) have been given a second chance. At the same time, Tom Bruce, Finlay McCreath and Oliver Davidson will be seen on the World Cup stage for the first time.
Scotland got the chance to play this tournament at the last moment. Actually, Bangladesh had demanded to move its matches out of India, which was not accepted by the ICC. After this, Scotland was included in the tournament as the next highest ranked team.
Considering the short time, Scotland has also decided to send two traveling reserves – Jasper Davidson and Jack Jarvis with the team. Apart from this, three non-travelling reserves have also been selected.
Scotland will start its World Cup campaign on 7 February with a match against West Indies at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Team selection is as follows:
Richie Berrington (captain), Tom Bruce, Matthew Cross, Bradley Currie, Oliver Davidson, Chris Graves, Zainullah Ihsan, Michael Jones, Michael Leask, Finlay McCreath, Brandon McMullan, George Munsey, Safyaan Sharif, Mark Watt and Bradley Wheal.
