Graeme Smith shared his views on the competitiveness shown by the players during the fourth edition of the SA20, which concluded on Sunday, January 25. Sunrisers Eastern Cape won their third title, defeating Pretoria Capitals in the final.
Smith, who is the League Commissioner of the SA20, was beaming with pride during a media interaction on Tuesday after the latest edition of South Africa's premier T20 league turned out to be a grand success. The final turned out to be a humdinger as the Sunrisers recovered from 48/4 to chase down a 159-run target with six wickets and four balls to spare.
In the first innings, Dewald Brevis slammed one of the most remarkable centuries in T20 cricket. He smashed 101 off 56 balls on a tricky surface at Newlands, Cape Town. The rest of the team could contribute only 25 runs off 64 balls.
During the media interaction, Smith was asked about how devastating it is for a player when he ends up on the losing side despite playing extremely well. The former South African captain hailed Brevis and said that the youngster didn't have a great campaign in the round-robin phase of the tournament, but hit his straps during the playoffs.
"I did have a brief chat with Brevis after the match, but there wasn't a lot in it because things were a bit hectic as expected. However, I heard people on the ground saying that it was one of the best hundreds they had seen," Smith said.
"Brevis didn't get too many runs during the league phase but when the going got tough in the playoffs, he put his hand up and showcased his talent," the 44-year-old added.
Smith was particularly pleased with how much effort the players put in on the field and how passionate they were about winning the coveted title.
"There has been a notion that some players don't take franchise cricket seriously. However, that wasn't an issue with any team this time. You could see how delighted the Sunrisers' players were after the match and conversely, the Capitals' camp was disconsolate.
