India defeated New Zealand by 48 runs in the first T20I of the five-match series on January 21. Chasing 329 runs, the Kiwis managed 190/7 in 20 overs. Glenn Phillips was the only performer with the bat, amassing 78 runs off 40 balls, with the help of 6 sixes and 4 boundaries. Earlier, Abhishek Sharma’s 84 runs off 35 balls took the score to 238/7. He hit 8 sixes and 5 fours. Rinku Singh also showed his class, amassing an unbeaten 44 runs off 20 deliveries, with the help of 4 boundaries and 3 sixes.
India were a better team and dominated New Zealand in the game. Suryakumar Yadav (32) and Hardik Pandya (25) also contributed with the bat. For New Zealand, Kyle Jamieson and Jacob Duffy claimed two wickets each.
Varun Chakravarthy and Shivam Dube bowled well and picked up two scalps each for the hosts.
Abhishek Sharma was named the player of the match for scoring 84 runs.
India’s total of 238 proved too big for the Kiwis and they couldn’t go past it. New Zealand lost Devon Conway (0) and Rachin Ravindra Jadeja (1) with just 1 run on the board, and it allowed India to put the visitors on the back foot.
India skipper Suryakumar was pleased with the performance of his players. “It is good to put runs on the board and then defend with dew. All batters played their roles,” he said.
Mitchell Santner lauded the Indian team. “We got a good hit. India have been outstanding in the last two years. I am happy with GP’s knock. Duffy showed his class,” he said.
Abhishek Sharma opined on his POTM award. “You have to carry intent when you want to hit all balls. All teams have plans for me but it is about my preparations. I am going to back myself,” he said.
India have taken a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. The second T20I is scheduled to be played on January 23 in Raipur.
A1: Abhishek Sharma was awarded Player of the Match for scoring 84 runs.
