Lizelle Lee has been fined 10 percent of her match fee and handed one demerit point for breaching the Women's Premier League Code of Conduct during Delhi Capitals’ fixture against Mumbai Indians at the BCA Stadium in Vadodara on Tuesday.
The incident took place in the 11th over of the Capitals’ innings, when Lee was adjudged stumped off the bowling of Amanjot Kaur. The delivery, bowled down the leg side, saw Lee attempt a flick shot, during which she appeared to lose her balance. As she overextended, wicketkeeper Rahila Firdous moved quickly to collect the ball and dislodge the bails.
What followed was an extended deliberation by the on-field umpires, who sought assistance from the third umpire to confirm the decision. Several replay angles were examined, including footage from the stump camera. After careful review, the third umpire concluded that Lee’s bat was marginally off the ground at the precise moment the bails were removed, resulting in the dismissal being upheld.
Lee, who had been batting fluently and was nearing a half-century, was visibly unhappy with the decision. She had scored 46 runs off 28 balls and looked well set at the crease. Her reaction following the dismissal, both as she walked off the field and shortly thereafter, drew the attention of match officials.
According to the Women’s Premier League media advisory, Lee admitted to committing a Level 1 offence under Article 2.2 of the Code of Conduct. This article relates to the abuse of cricket equipment or inappropriate behaviour during the course of a match.
Under the league’s disciplinary framework, sanctions for Level 1 offences typically involve fines and the allocation of demerit points. In such cases, the Match Referee’s decision is considered final and binding, with no provision for appeal.
Capitals eventually managed to win the contest as Mumbai Indians were restricted to 154/5 wickets with Marizanne Kapp and Shree Charani being the pick of the bowlers. Kapp bowled out her four over quota for just eight runs, picking up one wicket while Charani picked up three wickets for 33 runs.
Capitals chased down the target with an over to spare riding on the back of captain Jemimah Rodrigues' brisk half-century.
