NEW DELHI: The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Thursday officially sent a second letter to the ICC, detailing its security- concerns about traveling to India for the upcoming T20 World Cup, while once again pushing for a venue shift to Sri Lanka.
The tournament is set to begin on February 7, with Bangladesh scheduled to play four matches — three in Kolkata and one in Mumbai.
Bangladesh have declined to travel to India following the release of pacer Mustafizur Rahman from the IPL, a decision taken on the instructions of the BCCI, which cited unspecified “developments all around” as the reason.
“Following discussions with sports ministry advisor Asif Nazrul, the BCB has once again sent a communication to the ICC. The ICC wanted to know areas of concern with regards to security and BCB has cited them,” a source close to the cricket board told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
However, the source did not reveal the exact details mentioned in the correspondence.
The latest move comes amid ongoing exchanges between the BCB and the ICC over Bangladesh’s participation in the event. While the ICC has so far remained tight-lipped, it has reportedly sought clarity on the precise nature of the security issues raised by the Dhaka-based board.
It is learned that there is also a divide within the BCB on how to handle the situation.
One faction of the board is backing Nazrul’s firm stance, while another believes dialogue should continue with the ICC and Indian authorities.
This group is emphasizing the need for stronger and foolproof security measures for the Bangladesh team throughout its stay in India.
Nazrul, known for his outspoken criticism of India in the past, is believed to be advocating a tougher approach, which marks a shift from the BCB’s historically cordial relationship with the BCCI.
Mustafizur’s release came in the backdrop of recent incidents involving attacks on minorities in Bangladesh.
At present, the ICC has not indicated any plans to move Bangladesh’s matches from Kolkata and Mumbai to Colombo.
The BCB, however, has maintained that the ICC has shown readiness to engage with them in evaluating the security concerns raised.
