Delhi: The Indian team, which is preparing for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, has suffered an unexpected setback. The health of middle order batsman Tilak Verma, who played an important role in the T20 Asia Cup final, has suddenly deteriorated, due to which it is considered almost impossible for him to play in the T20 International series against New Zealand.

According to the information received, 23-year-old left-handed batsman Tilak Verma was playing for his home team Hyderabad in Rajkot in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. After breakfast on the morning of 7 January, he suddenly complained of severe pain in the lower abdomen. As the pain increased, the team management immediately admitted him to a private hospital in Rajkot, where preliminary tests and scans were done.

Serious problem revealed in investigation

After detailed examination in the hospital, doctors confirmed testicular torsion. Considering the seriousness of the situation, immediate surgery was advised, which was successfully carried out. After the surgery, Tilak’s condition is said to be stable and he is currently under the observation of doctors.

Case under the supervision of BCCI doctors

All the medical reports of the investigation conducted in Rajkot were later sent to the expert doctors of BCCI’s Center of Excellence (COE) in Bengaluru. According to a source associated with BCCI, after seeing the scan reports, surgery was considered necessary. Doctors estimate that it may take at least three to four weeks for Tilak to become completely fit.

Fear of being out of the series against New Zealand

In such a situation, a big question has arisen on the availability of Tilak Verma in the five-match T20I series against New Zealand starting from January 21. Looking at the current situation, the possibility of him being out of the entire series is considered quite high. An official statement on this can be issued by BCCI soon.

Brainstorming begins on replacement

Keeping in mind the possible absence of Tilak Verma, the Indian team management has started considering his option. However, according to reports, Shubman Gill is not at the forefront of this race. The team management is trying to give a chance to such a player who can make an immediate impact by entering the middle order and maintain the team balance. Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer may return to the team.
