In the context of T20 World Cup 2026, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has given a clear message to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) that either they play the tournament in India, or they can lose their points. If Bangladesh team does not play matches in India then it will not get any points in the league phase and will have to be out of the tournament, because all the matches of Bangladesh will be played in India. Without points, Bangladesh will not be able to qualify for the Super 8.
The issue started when the BCCI directed Mustafizur Rahman to be dropped from IPL 2026, after which the Bangladesh Cricket Board raised the issue of not playing the T20 World Cup in India with the ICC. However, ICC seems to be rejecting this demand of Bangladesh Cricket Board. According to a report by ESPNcricinfo, in a virtual meeting held on January 6, the ICC told the BCB that Bangladesh’s matches cannot be played outside India due to growing security concerns.
The ICC made it clear to the BCB that Bangladesh will have to come to India to play the T20 World Cup, otherwise it will risk losing points. However, BCB says that the governing body has not given them any such ultimatum. Following the decision on Tuesday, neither the BCCI nor the BCB have issued any official statement.
This step of ICC makes it clear that any team refusing to play a match in any country will have to face losing points. There have been four such cases in the history of cricket, when a team refused to play a match in an ICC tournament in a country due to security reasons or political instability and had to be banked over or forfeited. This also happened in the 1998 and 2003 ODI World Cups.
