Delhi: Indian ODI team captain Shubman Gill’s bad phase in fifty over cricket continues. While playing for Punjab in Vijay Hazare Trophy, he could not make a big score against Goa. In this match played on 6 January, Gill could score only 11 runs.

Shubman failed in the return match

This match was their first match in the Vijay Hazare Trophy this season. In response to 211 runs scored by Goa, Punjab team came out to bat. Shubman Gill started the innings with Prabhsimran Singh but the team could not get a good start.

Prabhsimran Singh was out in the first three overs. After this, Shubman Gill also returned to the pavilion in the fifth over. He was dismissed by Vasuki Kaushik on the very first ball of his spell. Gill scored 11 runs in 12 balls which included two fours.

White ball fifty not made since February 2025

Statistics show that Shubman Gill has been struggling to score runs for a long time. His last score of more than fifty came against Bangladesh in February 2025 when he scored a century. After this, most of his scores remained in single digits only. In some matches he scored 46, 31 and 24 runs but he also remained away from a half-century.

He could not play many matches due to injury during the South Africa series. This match of Vijay Hazare Trophy was an important opportunity for him to prepare before the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand but he could not take advantage of it.

Despite this, the selectors and head coach Gautam Gambhir have maintained faith in him. Shubhman Gill is continuously getting opportunities while players like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rituraj Gaikwad are out of the team. Now it has to be seen whether Gill is able to return to his form in the New Zealand series or not.
