Delhi: BCCI recently announced the Indian team for the three-match ODI series against New Zealand. Shubman Gill will captain the team in this series, while Shreyas Iyer has been made the vice-captain. Meanwhile, another big news has come out regarding Shreyas. Before the series against New Zealand, he has been given important responsibility in domestic cricket.
Shreyas got the command of Mumbai in Vijay Hazare Trophy
Shreyas Iyer has been appointed the captain of Mumbai team in Vijay Hazare Trophy. Earlier this responsibility was being performed by Shardul Thakur, but due to injury he is out of the tournament. After this the team management expressed confidence in Iyer.
Mumbai Cricket Association issued a statement on January 5 informing about this decision. The association said that Shreyas Iyer will captain the Mumbai team for the remaining league matches. The team is expected to benefit from his experience in important matches.
Awaiting BCCI approval
Whether Iyer will remain captain after the league stage of Vijay Hazare Trophy or not will depend on his fitness. Iyer has been selected in the team for the ODI series against New Zealand starting from January 11 in Baroda.
BCCI had already made it clear that Iyer’s fitness will be tested at the Center of Excellence. If he is considered fit for international cricket, he will join the ODI team. In such a situation, Mumbai may have to choose a new captain for the knockout matches. At present, Iyer will captain the team in the remaining league matches.
