Shreyas Iyer Named as Mumbai Captain for Vijay Hazare

The Indian captain Shreyas Iyer has been named as the captain for Mumbai for the Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT), taking over from Shardul Thakur, who has been ruled out domestic tournament due to an injury.

“The MCA is pleased to announce that Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as the Captain of the Mumbai senior men’s team for the remaining league matches of the Vijay Hazare Trophy,” said a association statement.

Shreyas Iyer’s fitness clearance is beyond his return to VHT as he is expected for international duties after being named in ODI squad for the New Zealand tour of India 2026.

“Shardul has suffered an injury and has been advised to rest. We have other players such as Shivam Dube and Suryakumar Yadav available, and Shreyas Iyer has been named the Mumbai captain for remaining matches,” said Mumbai chief selector Sanjay Patil.

During the India squad announcement, BCCI said Shreyas Iyer’s fitness would be assessed at the Centre of Excellence and that he would join ODI the squad if cleared.

If Shreyas Iyer get the all-clear for an international return, the MCA will appoint another captain for VHT knockouts.

“We will take a call once things are clear. Shreyas will lead the team in the remaining two league games,” MCA secretary Unmesh Khanvilkar said.

Shreyas Iyer has been out of action since undergoing surgery in Australia for Spleen injury he sustained during the third ODI game against Australia in Sydney.

Mumbai are currently in the second place in Group C, and they are well-placed to progress to the next round. Mumbai will play their next league stage game against Himachal Pradesh and punjab on January 06 and 08 respevctively.

Meanwhile, the ODI series against New Zealand will begin on January 11 at Vadodara International Cricket StadiumDo not worry.

The second and third ODI will be played on January 14 and 18 at Rajkot and Indore respectively.
