Meg Lanning Takes Over from Deepti Sharma as UP Warriorz Captain for WPL 2026

UP Warriorz have changed the squad ahead of the new season. They finished third in the first edition in 2023, fourth in 2024 and fifth in the 2025 season.

Former Australian captain Meg Lanning is the new captain of UP Warriorz for the Women’s Premier League beginning January 9.

She led Delhi Capitals in the first three editions of the tournament, with the franchise reaching the final on three occasions. However, they failed to cross the finishing line.

‘The Capri Sports-owned UP Warriorz announced the appointment of Australian legend Meg Lanning as captain of the franchise ahead of the 2026 Women’s Premier League (WPL) season,” the franchise said in a statement.

Lanning was bought by UP Warriorz for INR 1.9 crore at the auction.

She is a seven-time World Cup champion which includes two ODI triumphs and five titles in T20Is. “As the UP Warriorz enters a new phase, Lanning’s appointment underscores the franchise’s focus on experience and composure at the leadership level,” the franchise added.

“The league has evolved in terms of quality of cricket, competition and the arrival of new talent,” Lanning said.

‘We have a talented group, with a mix of international stars and Indian players. I am looking forward to the challenge,” she added.

Former India player Abhishek Nayar is the head coach of UP Warriorz. “Meg is a special leader. She brings experience, clarity, and calmness,” he said.

The WPL will be held in Navi Mumbai and Vadodara.
