BCCI has directed Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to remove Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from the team. This decision has been taken due to the recent increasing violence against minority Hindus in Bangladesh, where protests were taking place over this issue.
BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia issued a statement in this regard saying, “Keeping in mind the incidents that have happened in Bangladesh in recent times, the Board has directed KKR to release Mustafizur Rahman.” He also said that if Kolkata Knight Riders want a replacement player, then they will be allowed to do so.
The controversy over Mustafizur Rahman playing in IPL 2026 increased when reports of violence came to light in Bangladesh. In the last 14 days, three Hindus have been murdered in Bangladesh, after which the people there and especially the Hindu community were objecting that a player who is linked to this controversy should be given a chance to play in the IPL.
There has been an increase in incidents of violence against the minority Hindu community in Bangladesh in recent times. Due to this violence, Hindu organizations and religious leaders there have raised their voice against Mustafizur Rahman playing in the IPL. They considered it to be support for the violence against the Hindu community of Bangladesh. This controversy has created a stir in the IPL and cricket world as well.
Even before this decision, there has been controversy between cricket and politics regarding many other incidents in Bangladesh. Now this step of BCCI once again gives rise to the questions of adulteration of politics in cricket.
The IPL 2026 season will begin on March 26, and its final will be played on May 31. During this time, amidst the controversies, it will be interesting to see whether Bangladeshi players will be able to avoid such controversies to play in IPL in future.
