The Indian captain is now expected to play in the ODI series against New Zealand starting from January 11. At the same time, he did not get a place in the T20 World Cup team announced on December 20. This decision came as a surprise to many people.
After returning to T20 International cricket, Gill scored only 291 runs in 15 matches. His average was a little more than 24 and he could not score any half-century.
Despite his poor form, the team management kept looking for the right combination. Sanju Samson was first played down and later dropped from the team. Many questions were raised over the decision of his exclusion from the T20 World Cup team. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar said that Gill was left out not because of lack of quality but because of the team combination.
