Marin has been appointed in place of Harendra Singh, who resigned amid allegations of poor team performance and arbitrariness in coaching. 51-year-old Marin, a former Netherlands hockey player, was earlier associated with the Indian women’s hockey team from 2017 to 2021. After about five years, he has been given this responsibility again. His coaching team will also include Matias Villa, who has been given the responsibility of analytical coach.
Wayne Lombard is also returning to the Indian hockey team, who will play the role of scientific advisor and head of sports performance. “It feels great to return to India. After four and a half years, I return to this position with new energy and a clear vision to help take the team forward and help the players perform better at the international level,” Marin said in a Hockey India release.
The team’s strong reputation was built during Marin’s tenure and he is credited with building a cohesive team where players shared in each other’s success. He stepped down after the Tokyo Olympics due to family reasons. During his last tenure, the Indian team had reached the top 10 in the world rankings.
Former Argentine midfielder Matias Villa made his international hockey debut in 1997. He represented his country at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and the 2004 Athens Olympics. He has been associated with coaching for more than 20 years.
Lombard will be supported in his work by Rodet Ila and Ciara Ila, who have been appointed scientific advisors. After the Tokyo Olympics, the Indian team could not get the success as expected, due to which a period of change began in the team. During this period, key players like captain Rani Rampal, Vandana Kataria and Deep Grace Ekka retired due to injuries.
The Indian women’s team could not qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics, although it won bronze medals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and 2023 Asian Games. The team won a silver medal at the Asia Cup last year, but that was not enough for direct qualification for the World Cup to be held in Belgium and the Netherlands in August.
Last year, the team could win only two matches in 16 matches of the FIH Pro League, due to which it had to enter the Nations Cup. The first big challenge before Marin as head coach will be the Women’s World Cup Qualifier tournament to be held in Hyderabad from March 8 to 14. Marin will reach India on January 14, while the national coaching camp will begin from January 19 at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) campus in Bengaluru.
Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey said that we welcome Sword Marin and the entire support staff to the Indian hockey family. He thanked the Sports Ministry and Sports Authority of India and said that the appointment process was completed on time keeping in mind the World Cup qualifiers.
Tirkey said that special emphasis has been laid on the fitness of the team, which was an important reason for the historic performance of the Indian women’s hockey team at the Tokyo Olympics. He expressed confidence that the team will perform well in future also.
