Kanpur. The number of people bitten by stray dogs is increasing every year. According to government data, in the year 2023, 30 lakh people were bitten and injured by dogs in the country, while in the year 2024, 37 lakh people were injured. In such a situation, the Supreme Court had last month ordered the local bodies and state governments to take strict action against stray and stray dogs. For this reason, the Municipal Corporation has decided to keep stray and stray dogs in Animal Birth Center (ABC) for life. However, in case of change in the dog’s behavior, the option of adoption will remain open. It has been decided that apart from the stray dogs, such pet dogs will also be stopped in the ABC Center which bite the people in the streets.

Sterilization and vaccination after arrest
The control room of the Municipal Corporation has been instructed to take the complaints to stray dogs seriously. In the same sequence, after receiving information about stray dogs biting pedestrians from five different areas, the Cattle Catching Team caught five dogs and locked them in the Animal Birth Centre. After sterilization and vaccination of the dogs at the centre, they will be kept in ABC’s shelter home. Chief Veterinary Officer Dr. R.K. Niranjan said that after catching a stray dog after biting a person, it will be kept in the Animal Birth Center for ten days and monitored, during this period, if its behavior is seen to be restrained, then it will be released in the old area after sterilization, but the dog that repeatedly bites people will have to remain behind the bars of the center for life.

Affidavit mandatory for adoption
The most dangerous dogs will be kept under strict surveillance for a month at the Animal Birth Center. After sterilization and vaccination, if any person wants to adopt a ferocious dog, then the adoption will be done by taking an affidavit. Chief Veterinary Officer Dr. R.K. Niranjan said that the adopter will have to take responsibility that the dog will not attack anyone in future. If the dog attacks someone then the adopter will be legally responsible. He told that before adopting the dog, a microchip will be implanted in its body, so that the Municipal Corporation team can keep monitoring from time to time whether a particular dog is at its owner’s house or at any other place. If no one comes forward to adopt a ferocious dog, it will have to stay in the Animal Birth Center for the rest of its life.

One and a half lakh stray dogs roaming in the city
According to the records of the Municipal Corporation, there are about 1.46 lakh stray dogs. About 85 thousand dogs have been sterilized and vaccinated. The recent incidents have scared the city regarding stray dogs. It is noteworthy that Vaishnavi Sahu, a BBA student in Shyam Nagar, was attacked and badly injured by a pack of dogs present on the road while returning home from college. Earlier, a young man was attacked by a dog of Pitbull breed in Sarsaiyaghat area. It is clear from all such incidents that the menace of stray dogs in the city can prove fatal at any time. The issue of stray dogs is also a big challenge for the Municipal Corporation. After the order of the Supreme Court, the campaign against stray dogs is now going on in Kanpur. In this mission, lakhs of rupees are being spent every month on sterilization and vaccination of dogs.
