Former spinner Amit Mishra said that he got constant trust and support under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. He said that Dhoni’s advice gave direction to his career. According to Mishra, if Dhoni had not been there, perhaps he would not have been able to make a place in the Indian team.
Delhi: Former Indian spin bowler Amit Mishra has recently spoken openly about MS Dhoni. He told how was his relationship with Dhoni during his career and what was his thinking regarding his role in the team.
It has often been said that Amit Mishra did not get full support from Dhoni. It was also discussed that Dhoni used to give more chances to bowlers like Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja on important occasions. This affected Mishra’s career. Now Mishra himself has given his opinion on these things.
In a podcast, Amit Mishra said, “People say that if Dhoni had not been the captain, his career would have been better. But, if Dhoni had not been there, I probably would not have joined the team.” Mishra told that his entry in the Indian team was under the captaincy of Dhoni and he was able to return to the team several times.
The former bowler clearly said that he never felt that Dhoni ignored him. Whenever he was part of the playing eleven. Dhoni used to talk to him and give suggestions regarding bowling. He told that he still remembers an ODI match against New Zealand which was his last ODI series.
India had scored around 260 to 270 runs in that match. While bowling, Mishra’s focus was on stopping runs. Then Dhoni came to him and said that he was not bowling his real bowling. Dhoni advised him not to think too much and asked him to bowl naturally.
According to Mishra, this little advice was very useful. He did the same and after that he started getting wickets. In that match he took five wickets and changed the course of the match. He said that was his best spell.
Amit told that Dhoni’s thinking was clear. He believed that if wickets were not taken then the match could go out of hand. Because of this confidence, Mishra was able to perform well whenever he played. He took 76 wickets in 22 tests for India. Took 64 wickets in 36 ODIs and 16 wickets in 10 T20 matches.
In the end he said that he has no regrets about his career. According to him, if Dhoni had not been there then perhaps he would not have been able to become a part of the Indian team.
