Latham, Conway celebrate half centuries in confident start for Black Caps

New Zealand openers Tom Latham and Devon Conway have made a solid start on day one of the third Test against the West Indies, with both men celebrating half-centuries.
After winning the toss and electing to bat at Bay Oval today, the pair have taken the Black Caps through to 138-0, with Latham on 58 and Conway on 77, before a rain shower this afternoon halted play.
Captain Latham's innings extended his lead as the highest run scorer as a New Zealand opening batter. At the time of the rain break, he was on 6017 runs. Former player John Wright is next on 5260.
Latham has scored 14 centuries with a best score of 264 not out. His average is 39.07.
New Zealand are 1-0 up in the three-test series after drawing the first Test in Christchurch and thrashing the West Indies in the second at the Basin Reserve.
Left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel was named in the XI this morning for what is his first Test on home soil since 2020.
The West Indies have not beaten New Zealand here in three decades. Of the last five Tests played between the nations, the Black Caps have won four, with the other drawn.
