Perth Scorchers began their Big Bash League (BBL) 2025/26 campaign with a five-wicket victory over Sydney Sixers in the season opener at Perth Stadium, a match overshadowed by tragic events off the field.

Cricket Australia made a rare exception to its strict anti-corruption protocols after distressing news emerged from Sydney’s Bondi Beach on December 14, the opening day of the BBL season. Normally, players are required to surrender their mobile phones upon arriving at the venue. However, Sixers players were permitted to briefly access their phones to check on the safety of family and friends following the shocking incident involving a shooting at the beach.

The tragedy deeply affected the players, many of whom were preparing for the match amid growing concern back home. Sixers pacer Charlie Stobo expressed his sympathy for those impacted. “Our hearts go out to everyone in Sydney,” he said. “We were allowed to use our phones just to check in with family and friends. Everything unfolded very quickly.”

The match itself was delayed by 80 minutes due to rain and was eventually reduced to an 11-over-per-side contest. Batting first, Sydney Sixers struggled to build momentum, setting a modest target of 114.

Perth Scorchers chased down the total with five wickets and five balls to spare, thanks largely to a match-winning knock from Cooper Connolly. The left-hander was named Player of the Match for his explosive 59 off 31 balls, steering the hosts to a winning start to their BBL campaign.
