Teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction can buy a maximum of eight foreign players for their squad. This limit is part of the league’s long-standing squad composition rule, which allows each franchise to build a balanced group while maintaining strong representation for Indian talent.
While a franchise can sign up to eight overseas players, only four can feature in the playing 11 of any match, which means teams usually look for specialists who offer clear, situational value rather than stacking similar profiles.
The cap also forces franchises to think strategically during the auction. For example, sides often secure a mix of roles such as power hitters, pace bowlers suited to Indian conditions, and utility all-rounders who provide flexibility. Many teams also keep one overseas slot for a high-impact finisher or a death-overs expert, depending on their needs from the previous season.
This structure keeps the auction competitive. It pushes teams to prioritise overseas names who can influence games immediately, as seen in recent seasons where impactful foreign picks like Nicholas Pooran, or Pat Cummins have shaped campaigns with match-winning performances.
