Team India captain Rohit Sharma and chief selector Ajit Agarkar addressed journalists on various topics ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024 in June. The World Cup will take place in the USA and West Indies.
Nearly five months after the Mumbai Indians surprised many by announcing Hardik Pandya as their new captain, replacing Rohit Sharma, the Indian skipper has finally addressed the captaincy change publicly.
“You don’t always get what you want, but I am happy. I have played under many captains in the past. My focus is on my game right now and what I could do for the team,” he said.
Though disappointed by the captaincy issue, Rohit Sharma did not conceal his feelings. He noted that playing without the captaincy was nothing new, having spent many years of his career under different captains.
“I was captain before, then I was not and then again was appointed as captain. It’s a part of life. It’s not different to me, it has been a great experience captaining MI but now I look forward to how I can deliver as a player,” he added.
With five IPL championship victories, Rohit Sharma shares the record for most titles as captain alongside MS Dhoni. Rohit led the Mumbai Indians to the coveted IPL title in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020 during his decade-long tenure leading the franchise from midway through the 2013 season through 2023.
So far, Hardik Pandya’s first season as captain of the Mumbai Indians has been disastrous, with the Mumbai-based franchise nearly eliminated from playoff contention after winning just three of their first ten matches.
