During the first Test played against South Africa in Kolkata, Shubman Gill suffered stiffness in his neck, due to which he had to be out of the team.

Due to that injury, Gill was completely ruled out of both the Test and ODI series. He was also selected for the T20 series but it was said that he would be available to play only if he is fit.

The good thing from the Indian team's point of view was that Gill passed his fitness test at BCCI's Center of Excellence. He met all the fitness parameters. Team India's head coach Gautam Gambhir also confirmed Gill's fitness after the last ODI played in Vizag. Gambhir said that Shubman has become fit.

This is the reason why he has been selected. He said that Gill is not only ready to play but is also hungry for runs.
