Nathan Lyon expressed his frustration and disappointment after being left out of Australia's playing XI for the pink-ball Ashes Test at The Gabba in Brisbane. The highly-anticipated encounter commenced on Thursday, December 4.

Michael Neser replaced Lyon in the side as Australia went in with an all-pace attack. Stand-in captain Steve Smith indicated a liking for additional seamers to make the most of the pink ball in the day-night conditions. For the unversed, the pink ball swings around prodigiously, especially once the artificial lights come into play.

However, it is important to note that Lyon has had phenomenal success even with the pink ball.

He has accounted for 43 wickets in 13 pink-ball Tests at an average of 25.62.

"Absolutely filthy," Lyon said while using local slang for angry during an interview with host broadcaster Seven Network, and added, "But yeah, can't do anything about it. So, I hope I can play my role in making sure I get the guys ready and do whatever I can to make sure that we get the right result here."

Lyon also said that he has not been able to discuss his omission with Australia's head coach, Andrew McDonald and the selectors yet.

"I just hadn't had it in me to sit down with the coach and George at the moment. So that will happen. I'm not the first player to miss a test match, and I won't be the last," Lyon stated.

Previously, Lyon was also left out of the playing XI for the day-night test in the West Indies in July. He recalled his reaction to the recent decision, saying he felt "pretty gutted because I know the role that I can play within Australian cricket and especially at a venue like this."

Lyon is seventh on the list of leading wicket-takers in Test cricket.

He has 562 scalps from 140 Tests. The right-arm off-spinner needs two more wickets to surpass Glenn McGrath's tally and become the second-highest wicket-taker for Australia in the longest format.

Meanwhile, England finished Day 1 of the pink-ball Test at 325/9 after Joe Root slammed his 40th century in the format.

For Australia, Mitchell Starc stood out, as he bagged a six-for.
