England scored 325/9 on Day 1 of the second Ashes Test against Australia at the Gabba. Batting first after winning the toss in the day-night game, the visitors were helped by Joe Root, who scored his first century in Australia. For Australia, it was Mitchell Starc’s day as the pacer dismissed 6 batters, taking his wicket tally to 16 in just three innings.
Root amassed an unbeaten 135 runs off 202 balls, laced with 15 fours and 1 six. Zak Crawley (76) and Jofra Archer (32*) were also among the runs. Starc bowled 19 overs and picked up 6 wickets after conceding 71 runs.
England had an upper hand in the first session. They lost 2 wickets for 5 runs, but Crawley and Root took the score to 98/2 in 24 overs. Ben Duckett (0) and Ollie Pope (0) failed to open their accounts.
