Delhi: Former Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh believes that it is unfortunate that the future of legendary players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli is being decided by people who themselves have not achieved much in their careers. Despite this, he expressed hope that both the senior batsmen will continue to play for Team India till the 2027 ODI World Cup.
38 year old Rohit and 37 year old Kohli now play only in ODI format. Amidst the changing international calendar and decreasing ODI matches, the discussion is intense whether both will be able to play till the World Cup to be held in South Africa in 2027. Head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar have not given any clear indication on this, while Rohit and Kohli have hinted at fighting for their place.
Speaking to the media during DP World ILT20 Season 4, Harbhajan said, “For me, this is beyond comprehension. I have been a player myself and I have also seen such situations. Many of my teammates have also gone through this. It is quite unfortunate and is not even discussed.”
He further said, “I am happy to see Virat Kohli playing so strongly, but it is a bit disappointing that his future is being decided by people who have not achieved much themselves.”
Harbhajan said that there is still more than a year left for the World Cup and he believes that both Rohit and Kohli will perform brilliantly in that tournament too and will set the standards for the new generation.
Let us tell you that in the India-South Africa ODI series, Kohli has scored two consecutive centuries, while Rohit Sharma has also returned to form and has played two half-centuries and an unbeaten 121-run innings in his last four innings.
Bhajji further said, “He has always scored runs and has been a big player for the team. I am very happy for him. He is playing very strong and is setting a perfect example for the coming generation of what it takes to be a champion.”
