Virat Kohli scored his 53rd ODI century, also his 46th century while batting at No.3, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar's previous record of 45 at the same position. He now holds 11 streaks of hundreds in consecutive ODI innings, more than AB de Villiers' six.
Kohli has scored seven or more centuries against four different opponents: 10 vs Sri Lanka, 9 vs West Indies, 8 vs Australia, and 7 vs South Africa. Tendulkar is the only other player to achieve a similar feat against multiple teams.
Although Kohli and Gaikwad celebrated individual milestones, India's mammoth total was ultimately chased down by South Africa, leaving the series finely poised for the final match.
Despite stellar performance from Kohli and Gaikwad, India's efforts fell short. South Africa chased down India's massive target of 359, winning by four wickets and leveling the series 1-1. Aiden Markram scored his fourth ODI century and formed crucial partnerships with Temba Bavuma and Matthew Breetzke, while Dewald Brevis added a quick fifty, helping South Africa achieve the third-biggest successful run chase in ODI history.
The decisive third ODI will be played in Visakhapatnam on Saturday.
