England left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone was snapped up by UP Warriorz for Rs. 85 lakh at the WPL Auction on Thursday in New Delhi.
The Warriorz used their Right to Match (RTM) option to get back their player after Delhi Capitals had initially won the final bid. DC upped its bid to Rs. 85 lakh, which the Warriorz matches.
Ecclestone finished the recent Women’s ODI World Cup with 16 wickets at an average of 14.25 and an economy rate of 4.05, emerging as England’s most consistent performer with the ball.
She began the competition playing second fiddle to fellow left-armer Linsey Smith’s match-winning spell against South Africa but grew in influence as the tournament progressed. She was decisive against Bangladesh with 3 for 24, followed by a dominant 4 for 17 against Sri Lanka. Despite tougher conditions in Indore and an injury scare ahead of the semifinal, Ecclestone signed off as England’s standout bowler in the semifinal defeat to South Africa with 4 for 44.
Her ability to control the middle overs, attack both edges of the bat, and operate under pressure made her one of the most sought-after overseas spinners at the auction.
