Virat Kohli’s worth ethic drew praise from legendary fast bowler Dale Steyn after the batter scored a match-winning hundred in the first ODI against South Africa in Ranchi. The 37-year-old batted aggressively from the start, amassing his 52nd hundred to help India win the contest at the JSCA International Stadium Complex, Ranchi.
Steyn said while most sportsmen past their prime like to stay at their homes with their families and dogs, Virat is still batting like a youngster at 37. He highlighted that the former India captain is still diving and sprinting, giving the impression that he still wants to be there in the middle. Steyn is impressed with Kohli’s commitment in the twilight of his career.
“When you speak to most 37 or 38-year-olds, they hate leaving their homes, kids and dogs. But Virat is different and is eager to go out and perform for India. You can see it when he takes a run or dives around to stop the ball. He is mentally strong, young, fresh and wants to be on the field,” Steyn told JioStar.
Kohli’s 52nd ODI hundred came at a crucial time, with questions being raised on his place in the national squad, especially with him only playing the fifty-over format after retiring from T20Is and Test cricket.
Steyn also highlighted Virat’s experience and preparations.
“He has been a part of over 300 ODIs in the 15–16 years, so he is very experienced. The game is in his body and mind. Even if it had rained for three days over here, it wouldn’t have impacted him. He is strong mentally and visualises well. Big players back themselves because they have been part of the system for a long time. Virat is still excited about playing cricket,” he added.
Kohli also spoke about the mental preparations. “I don’t believe in practising a lot. All my preparations have been mental. I work physically hard, and as long as I am fit, it feels good,” Virat said.
“I have played 300-odd ODI games. When you can hit the ball in practice, you know you are good,” he added.
Kohli’s latest ton was his 83rd century in international cricket. He is 37 but continues to set a benchmark for the young and senior layers of the team.
