The recent ICC Women’s World Cup was a showcase for India’s young talent, with both Jemimah Rodrigues and Shafali Verma making massive statements on the global stage. We saw two very different but equally brilliant performances when it mattered most. Jemimah played an extraordinary knock in the semi-finals against Australia, scoring a clutch hundred under immense pressure.

On the other hand, Shafali Verma showed her big-match temperament with a blistering 87 in the final, proving she can deliver on the grandest stage. When we look at their numbers for the Delhi Capitals in the WPL, the difference in styles becomes even clearer.

Shafali has been a powerhouse at the top of the order. Across 27 matches, she has smashed 865 runs at an average of 36.04, maintaining an incredible strike rate of 162.59 with six half-centuries. Jemimah, while consistent, plays a different role. In the same number of matches, she has scored 507 runs at an average of 28.16 and a strike rate of 139.66.

Now that the Delhi Capitals are looking for a new captain for WPL 2026, the choice isn’t just about runs. It’s about temperament. Shafali is only 21, and her game relies on freedom and aggression; the burden of captaincy might impact her natural game. Jemimah, however, brings a sense of calm and stability. She communicates well with bowlers and has experience leading at junior levels.

The DC squad is comprised of international heavyweights, including Laura Wolvaardt, Marizanne Kapp, and Annabel Sutherland. To lead names like these, you need someone who naturally commands respect and understands the nuances of the game. Jemimah Rodrigues seems to be that person. While Shafali Verma continues to be the match-winner who destroys bowling attacks, Jemimah could be the steady hand guiding the ship as captain.
