South Africa batting coach Ashwell Prince has emphasized that the Proteas’ ODI side still needs to sharpen its temperament in “clutch moments” as they continue experimenting ahead of the 2027 World Cup. Prince admitted that the team’s focus over the past year has largely been on Test cricket and the upcoming T20 World Cup, leaving the 50-over format in a trial phase.

“We’ve been able to try different combinations in the 50-over space, and we still have time before finalizing a squad,” Prince said on the eve of the first ODI against India.

While satisfied with the team’s batting and bowling depth, Prince stressed that high-pressure moments remain a key area for improvement. “If there’s one area, it’s the bigger moments — tighter, clutch moments. White-ball cricket is about performing under pressure, and that’s where we want to improve,” he added.

With heavy dew expected during the series opener on Sunday, Prince noted that the toss could play a crucial role. “Teams usually prefer chasing in dew conditions. But if we bat first on a good pitch and post a massive score, it can force the opposition into mistakes,” he said.

Prince also acknowledged the return of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for India but insisted South Africa would not be intimidated. “They’re world-class and dangerous, but we focus on what damage we can cause, not on how they can hurt us,” he said.

Coming off a historic 2-0 Test series win in India, Prince described the triumph as “massive” and praised captain Temba Bavuma’s calm leadership. “He’s calm, collected, and experienced. That attitude filters through the dressing room,” he said.

Prince highlighted the team’s improved adaptability in India. “Years ago, conditions here were foreign. Now, many of our players tour India in various formats. Adaptability is key. We don’t preempt surfaces; we adapt to whatever is in front of us,” he explained.

He also commended Marco Jansen’s growth across formats. “His Test numbers are phenomenal. Batting at No. 8 or 9, he must score quickly once he’s in. That clarity has helped him,” Prince said, adding that communication between batters and bowlers has been crucial in exploiting challenging conditions.

Prince praised Quinton de Kock’s return, noting his significant influence on the dressing room. “He has a similar impact on us as Rohit and Virat have on India. His presence is massive, especially for young batters learning from him,” he said.

Despite India’s depth and experience, Prince stressed that South Africa’s approach remains straightforward. “India will always know their conditions better, but for us it’s about assessing quickly, adapting quickly, and communicating well,” he concluded.
