Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif has explained why MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli succeeded as long-term Test captains, crediting their contrasting yet highly effective leadership styles. Dhoni became the first India captain to take the team to No. 1 in the ICC Test rankings, while Kohli took the legacy forward by keeping India at the top for four consecutive years.

Kaif said Dhoni created an environment where players felt secure and backed, allowing them to express themselves freely. He also praised Dhoni’s remarkable understanding of the game, particularly his ability to build and utilize a formidable spin attack in home conditions.

“Do you know why Dhoni and Kohli became such great captains? Dhoni first backed the players during selection, created an environment where they felt comfortable, and then backed them during matches,” Kaif said in a video posted on

Kaif then highlighted how Kohli took India’s Test success to another level through his aggressive, bowler-driven approach. He said Kohli’s mindset made him the favorite captain of India’s pace unit, helping the team dominate both at home and overseas something Kaif feels has been missing under Rohit Sharma and now Shubman Gill.

“Virat Kohli went one step ahead of Dhoni. His aggression used to come out when the team was in trouble,” Kaif said. “He would tell his bowlers, ‘If you want to play, you have to take 20 wickets. Otherwise, don’t come to the ground.’ Kohli has lost only two Tests at home in 31 matches as captain. He believed in keeping the core intact.”

While Dhoni retired from international cricket several years ago, Kohli continues to play in the 50-over format. The two icons recently met at Dhoni’s residence in Ranchi ahead of the first ODI against South Africa.
