Key Points:
Criticism over Gautam Gambhir’s coaching has increased after India’s 0-2 Test defeat against South Africa. AB de Villiers said that Gambhir’s emotional nature can affect the players. Gambhir took responsibility for the defeat and is now preparing for the white ball series with the team.
Delhi: A lot of questions are being raised on Team India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir at the moment because India has lost 0-2 in the two-Test series of Freedom Trophy against South Africa. This is the second time in Gambhir’s tenure that India has been whitewashed by a team in a Test series at home. Earlier last year, New Zealand had also done this.
De Villiers talked about Gambhir’s coaching
After the defeat of the second test, many former players have raised questions on Gambhir’s coaching and his decisions. Former South African player AB de Villiers also spoke on this issue.
De Villiers said on R Ashwin’s YouTube channel, “It is not easy to talk to the Indian team. I don’t know how serious he is in terms of captaincy and management. I know him as an emotional player. If he is like that in the dressing room too, sometimes such an emotional coach is not considered good for the team. But, it does not mean that he should be like that coach. Every person is different. Some players are more comfortable with former player coaches, while some are like that. We are fine with a coach who may not have played cricket himself but has a lot of coaching experience.”
He said that this question is difficult because he has never played with Shukri nor has he been in the Indian dressing room with Gambhir, Morne Morkel or Ryan ten Doeschate. Everything looks good on paper, but they don’t know what actually happens inside. Every player’s experience is different. He told that he loved playing with Gary Kirsten. He was also a former player and was like Gambhir.
After the defeat, Gambhir took responsibility and said that the team could not perform well. He also reminded that this year the team had won the ICC Champions Trophy under his coaching. Now his next assignment will be India’s ODI and T20 series against South Africa. This white ball series is to start from 30th November.
