WPL was started in 2023. At that time only matches were played in Mumbai and Harmanpreet Kaur’s Mumbai Indians (MI) won the trophy by defeating Meg Lanning’s Delhi Capitals (DC) in the final. In the next season, which was played in Bengaluru and Delhi, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) won the title under the captaincy of Smriti Mandhana. DC was the runner-up again.
Last year, MI won its second WPL trophy by defeating DC. During this period, WPL was organized for the first time in four cities: Vadodara, Bengaluru, Lucknow and Mumbai.
It is noteworthy that in the league stage of WPL, each team played two matches against other teams. After this, the number 1 team directly reached the finals, while the second and third placed teams made it to the finals by playing eliminator matches.
