Sultan Azlan Shah Cup: India put up a tough fight in the rain-affected Sultan Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament match on Tuesday, but ultimately lost 2-3 to Belgium. Abhishek (33rd minute) and Shilanand Lakra (57th minute) scored for India, while Roman Duvecot (17th and 57th minute) and Nicolas de Kerpel (45th minute) scored for Belgium. Under the captaincy of defender Sanjay, India defeated three-time champion South Korea 1-0 in its first match played in this six-team competition on Sunday. Belgium were awarded their first penalty corner about 10 minutes into the match, followed by their second penalty corner soon after. However, on both occasions the Indian defense put in a strong performance to prevent a goal being scored and ensured that the score remained tied at the end of the first quarter.

India came back strongly in the second half and leveled the score in the 33rd minute thanks to a brilliant goal by Abhishek. However, Belgium once again took the lead in the 45th minute through Nicolas de Kerpel’s penalty corner goal.
Roman Duvecot (46th minute) put Belgium in a strong position by scoring a goal at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Only three minutes were left for the end of the match, when Shilanand Lakra (57th minute) gave India hope of a comeback by scoring a brilliant cross from Ravichandra Singh, but the team could not score an equalizing goal. India’s next match will be against Malaysia on Wednesday.
