India’s first innings in Guwahati Test ended at 201 runs. The team had started well, but the middle order faltered. Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav saved India from follow-on by playing struggling innings. South Africa has taken a strong hold on the match.
Delhi: In the second Test match being played in Guwahati, India’s first innings was very disappointing and the team was all out for 201 runs. In response to South Africa’s mammoth 489 runs, Indian batsmen were seen under constant pressure. The start was good, but the team kept losing wickets at regular intervals and failed to score big.
The most important thing was the brilliant performance of South African bowler Marco Jensen. Jensen took 6 wickets and completely broke the backbone of Indian batting. At the same time, off-spinner Simon Harmer increased the pressure on India by taking 3 wickets.
Yashasvi Jaiswal scored the maximum 58 runs for India. Playing with patience, he faced the South African bowlers for some time. However, as soon as he was out, India’s innings faltered. KL Rahul scored 22 runs, while Washington Sundar played an important inning of 48 runs and gave some relief to the team. Kuldeep Yadav struggled lower down the order, scoring 19 runs in 134 balls, but he did not get long support from any other batsman.
The middle order batsmen including captain Rishabh Pant once again flopped. Dhruv Jurel, Pant and Jadeja returned to the pavilion after getting out cheaply. India lost the last five wickets in just 7 runs.
On the other hand, South Africa’s strong bowling maintained its dominance throughout the session. Harmer’s accurate spin combined with Jensen’s pace and bounce did not allow the Indian batsmen to play freely.
On the basis of first innings, India is still 288 runs behind South Africa. The match is now in a difficult situation for India and the bowlers will have to perform brilliantly to make a comeback.
