Kolkata Knight Riders’ decision to release Andre Russell ahead of the IPL 2026 auction has grabbed significant attention. One of the most celebrated T20 all-rounders in IPL history, Russell’s exit marks the end of a 12-year association with KKR. Sharing his thoughts on the franchise’s bold decision, Anil Kumble described the release as a big call and reflected on KKR’s long-term transition plan.

Russell joined KKR in 2014 and quickly became the face of the franchise. Retained for INR 12 crore ahead of the 2025 mega auction, the West Indian remained one of KKR’s most trusted match-winners.

He is one of only two players in IPL history to score over 2000 runs and pick 100 wickets. However, after a modest IPL 2025 season and increasing age concerns, KKR finally decided to move on from their long-time star. Reacting to the development, former India captain Kumble stated just how massive the call was for the franchise.

"It is a big call for KKR to release Andre Russell because he has been their go-to player over the years. We know what he can do at the crease, not just with the bat but also with the ball. He is very destructive, and we have seen him change games from nowhere for KKR.

It is a big release for KKR. I am sure there were many discussions and conversations before taking this decision. But I think when you look at the longer term and what is best for the team, they probably had to let go of Andre Russell," he said on JioStar.

Looks like KKR is starting from scratch: Aakash Chopra

The West Indian, who is turning 38 during the 2026 season, has seen his athleticism and workload management become significant factors in his exit. Although multiple teams reportedly explored trading options, none took up the opportunity at his INR 12 crore valuation. KKR’s decision also matches their broader restructuring. The franchise released major names, including Venkatesh Iyer, Quinton de Kock, Anrich Nortje, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, and Moeen Ali, entering the mini-auction with a massive INR 64.3 crore purse. Former cricketer-turned commentator Aakash Chopra summed up KKR's direction.

“Looks like KKR is starting from scratch. And because KKR is going to enter the mini-auction with a purse size of 65 crores, they are going to pretty much dictate the auction proceedings, at least in the first 2–3 vital slots. So, someone like Cameron Green, you almost think that he is most likely to go to KKR, because of that purse size. They are going to be on a shopping spree when it comes to overseas players in the mini-auction," he said.
