NEW DELHI: A hilarious incident unfolded in the first session of Day 1 of the first Test between India and South Africa at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, when the stump mic caught Jasprit Bumrah mocking the visiting skipper Temba Bavuma for his short height.

The incident occurred in the 13th over when Bumrah bowled a good-length delivery and Bavuma played down the wrong line, getting hit on the back of his thigh. There was a huge appeal for LBW, but the umpire turned it down.

The Indian players quickly huddled to decide whether to go for a DRS review. However, their decision to stay put proved correct, as ball-tracking later showed the delivery was going over the leg stump.

While discussing whether to go for a DRS review, Bumrah jokingly reminded his teammates to keep Bavuma’s short height in mind, referring to him as a “bauna”. The remark drew a chuckle from teammates Ravindra Jadeja and Rishabh Pant, who couldn’t help but laugh.

It is worth noting that Bumrah was not targeting the South African skipper personally. His focus seemed to be on ensuring that Pant, who had a clear view of the delivery as wicketkeeper, could help the team decide whether to opt for a DRS review.

Bumrah also showcased his mastery with two unplayable deliveries to dismiss both South Africa openers Ryan Rickelton and Aiden Markram after they gave the visitors a flying start.

Opting to bat with an extra all-rounder in Wiaan Mulder, South Africa bossed the first 50 minutes, racing to 57 for no loss in 10 overs, before Bumrah (2/9 in 7 overs) turned the morning on its head with two wickets in five balls across successive overs.
