In a significant return to the cricket field, Ben Stokes took six wickets in England’s warm-up match against the England Lions in Perth. This match marks Stokes’ first action since July, following a shoulder injury that kept him sidelined for nearly four months.
Stokes showcased his skills by bowling 16 overs over three spells, achieving impressive figures of 6 for 52. Notably, all six of his dismissals came through catches on the leg side. His performance is a promising sign as England prepares for the Ashes series.
Meanwhile, England faces potential issues with fast bowler Mark Wood, who is also returning from injury.
After nine months out due to a knee problem, Wood bowled a predetermined eight overs but had to leave the field due to a hamstring injury during the afternoon session. A scan is scheduled for him on Friday. The day’s intensity diminished after Wood’s departure, as the Lions were eventually bowled out for 382 on a slow pitch at Lilac Hill. England’s decision to field first aimed to help players gain valuable overs before the first Ashes Test, which will commence on November 21 at Optus Stadium.
In a strategic move, England opted for an all-pace attack, featuring four specialist fast bowlers along with Stokes. Off-spinner Shoaib Bashir was excluded from the lineup. Among the players, Will Jacks stood out, contributing significantly with a score of 84, enhancing his chances for inclusion in the Test squad.
As England gears up for the Ashes, Stokes’ return and the condition of Wood will be under scrutiny.
Their warm-up match serves as a crucial preparation for the challenges ahead.
