Ryan Williams joined Bengaluru FC in the year 2023. Before this, he has played for English clubs Portsmouth and Fulham. He also represented Australia in the 2013 Under-20 World Cup.

He also represented the Australian team (Socceroos) at senior level in a friendly match against South Korea.

However, after playing for several years with Perth Glory, he felt a deep connection to his Indian roots.

Now 32-year-old Ryan Williams can make his debut for India against Bangladesh in the AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers this month. For them this is an opportunity to return to their roots. His maternal grandfather, Lincoln Eric Grostedt, was a well-known Mumbai footballer who played for the Tata team and represented Bombay in the 1956 Santosh Trophy final, where his team faced Syed Abdul Rahim’s Hyderabad team.

Ryan Williams, currently captain of Bengaluru FC, has become the second professional footballer to acquire Indian citizenship and represent the country at the senior level after Japan-born Izumi Arata (2012).
