New Delhi . The Supreme Court on Friday, during the hearing on the Air India Boeing Dreamliner plane crash in Ahmedabad, said that Pilot-in-Command Sumeet Sabharwal cannot be held responsible for the accident. The court said that “Sumeet had no fault in this accident, and you (father) should not carry this burden on your heart.”

The remarks were made by a bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi when 91-year-old Pushkraj Sabharwal, father of deceased pilot Sumeet Sabharwal, filed a petition. He had demanded in the petition that the investigation of this accident should be conducted impartially and no doubt should be cast on his son’s image.

The Supreme Court said that “even in the preliminary investigation report, there is no allegation against the pilot.” The court also said that no person or organization can be blamed until the investigation into the accident is completed. Along with this, the court has issued notice to the Central Government and DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) seeking response on this petition. In the initial report to the accident, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) had said that soon after takeoff, the fuel supply to both the engines of the aircraft was suddenly cut off, due to which control was lost and the aircraft crashed. 260 people died in this accident.

Justice Surya Kant told the father, “This accident was extremely unfortunate, but you should not be sad thinking that your son is being held guilty. Sumeet had performed his duty with utmost devotion.” The Supreme Court said that the investigating agencies should be allowed to work impartially to find out the real causes of the accident.
