Perry has remained the heartbeat of the side, scoring 4,689 runs at an average of 48.84, with two tons and 32 fifties, and chipping in with 70 wickets, including a memorable five-for.

Ellyse Perry’s long-standing stint as Sydney Sixers captain has drawn to a close, with the franchise confirming Ashleigh Gardner as the new leader ahead of the WBBL 2025 campaign. Perry, at the helm since the competition’s launch in 2015–16, steered the Sixers to consecutive titles in Seasons 2 and 3, carving out an enduring legacy as one of the league’s most accomplished skippers.

The Sixers’ fortunes have dipped of late, with the side unable to secure a finals berth in five of the last six editions. Still, under Perry’s watch, they managed 76 triumphs in 134 encounters. Perry herself remained the heartbeat of the side scoring 4,689 runs at a sublime average of 48.84, with two tons and 32 fifties, and chipping in with 70 wickets, including a memorable five-for.

Gardner, who captained the Sixers on one occasion during the 2023 season against the Melbourne Stars, said she was deeply honoured to assume the role on a permanent basis.

She acknowledged the mentorship of Ellyse Perry and national skipper Alyssa Healy, emphasising that the lessons learned from their leadership would serve as the foundation for guiding the Sixers into a new phase.

“I’m honoured to take on the captaincy of the Sydney Sixers, a club that’s been my home throughout my career. Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to learn from incredible leaders like Pez (Perry) and Midge (Healy), and I’m excited to carry that experience forward as I lead this group,” Gardner said.

Gardner also leads the Gujarat Giants in the Women’s Premier League and has been retained by the franchise for the 2026 edition. Her expanding leadership portfolio reflects her growth into one of Australia’s most consistent and trusted all-rounders. Perry, on the other hand, remains a cornerstone of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru setup in the WPL, continuing in her dual role as senior player and mentor.
