Announcement of return of Pro Wrestling League.
The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) announced on Saturday that the Pro Wrestling League (PWL) is returning. Following its last successful season in 2019, the league now returns in a new stronger public-private partnership model as Pro Wrestling League 2026. Its objective is to give a global platform to Indian wrestlers, strengthen the country's Olympic dreams and empower Indian mother power.
This official announcement was made in the press conference held on Saturday. On this occasion, former WFI President and former MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh was present as the chief guest, who inaugurated this new chapter of Indian wrestling.
The inaugural season of Pro Wrestling League 2026 is being considered an important event. However, the detailed schedule, franchise details and information about the participating international stars will be released in the coming months.
On this occasion, Brijbhushan Sharan Singh said that wrestling in India is not just a sport, it is our heritage. Rooted in our soil and culture, for many years I have seen amazing talent emerging in our akharas who did not have the platform they deserved. He said that this league will ensure that every young wrestler who dreams will have access to opportunities ranging from local akharas to international podiums. We are committed to making it the world's premier wrestling league.
Speaking on the occasion, WFI President Sanjay Kumar Singh said that the Indian Premier League (IPL) has shown how a structured league can discover and nurture domestic talent. Can give them exposure to competition on the world stage. Pro Wrestling League 2026 is a reflection of that commitment. This will be the same training ground that will prepare medal winners for our next Olympics, Asian Games and other prestigious international events.
Commenting on the league structure, league president and promoter Dayan Farooqui said that the Pro Wrestling League has been designed as a premier franchise-based ecosystem. We are creating an attractive franchise-ownership product for private corporations and investors. This structure is essential to raise the profile of the sport and ensure long-term growth.
Regarding the league-centric economic model, League CEO Akhil Gupta said that our vision is to change the lives of wrestlers. We are building a solid economic model, where wrestlers will be valued as professional athletes. Through structured contracts, league-wide incentives and franchise partnerships, we will provide them with financial stability, allowing our champions to focus solely on winning medals. League Chief Commercial Officer Sumit Dubey will play an active role in connecting franchises and sponsors.
